What happen in 2017? A big year abroad and at home

2017

Royal Palaces                                         Manhattan                            Vienna Xmas

Another year, more travelling. And loving every bit of it.

Oslo
February saw us heading to Norway and Oslo! A country I'd always wanted to visit since first reading Roald Dahl's The Witches all those years ago as a school kid.

February brought us snow, bitter cold winds, but more importantly, a beautiful city. We wandered Oslo which is big (but in many ways small too).

Cold, but worth it. Very picturesque

The Royal Palace was up the long promenade and a monument to behold. So many people came to see it, came to enjoy it. The yellow and pastel green building reminded me of those double lollies you had as a kid, but the pictures in the snow made for some memories, I tell you that.

The view atop the Opera House. Slippery stuff.

The Opera House was as iconic as I'd seen it online, and in terms of hostel locality, it was a mere 10 minute walk. We carefully moved up the slope to take in the Oslo landscape from the highest point of the Opera House. By the time my toes had numbed, I was in love with Oslo. What a great city.

The Akershus Fortress - built at the turn of the 13th Century which has also masqueraded as a prison too.

The following day, we visited the old fortress for a history lesson and a walking tour which took us around the port areas, churches and the Old City Hall. I remember my toes going numb again and thinking I needed some coffee.

On part of Ekeberg, the hills overlooking Oslo (the glow above the main skyline, on top of the distant hills is the ski slopes).

After a quick refuel, I convinced my partner in crime to hike up the hillsides for sunset (or the winter equivalent). After much complaining of coldness and numb toes, we made it. And it was worth it. The gold lights of the Oslo buildings against the night sky was spectacular.

Our reason for coming to the top was to see where Edvard Munch painted The Scream.

Munch's The Scream. A little surreal, really.

The following day, we were in the Oslo art gallery visiting the famous portrait. From seeing the iconic painting so many times throughout school and online, it was strange to be standing in front of the real thing. Strange, but extraordinary all the same.

One drawback I did find to Norway, and Scandinavia as a whole, or so I've been informed, was the prices. If you're going to go, save your pennies. It cost me 16 quid (not Kroner) for a beer and a cider. Safe to say, we didn't get too drunk on this trip!

New York

Ah, New York. My third visit after two previous trips in winter 2013 and summer 2014. I came up with a book series idea on my first trip so I wonder what my third trip my turn up.

My reason for returning to the Big Apple was that my cousin Matt was getting married. New Jersey style!

Amazing achievement on a site full of difficult memories.

So, this trip consisted of much food, drink and celebration. Sadly, we'd lost my uncle (his dad) a few months earlier so the wedding was at times tough for some of us, but a very enjoyable event. Who wouldn't want to sip champagne (red wine in my case) whilst overlooking the Manhattan skyline from New Jersey? As part of my cousin's best man speech (the groom's brother), I dressed as an old man who supposedly saved the groom from certain death when he fell onto the subway tracks after a night out. Jeremiah Jones was given a hero's welcome!

Jeremiah Jones had the moves too!

This is the best I could do with my useless Nokia. Time for an upgrade, I knew.

I did get to visit the 9/11 museum at Ground Zero this time however, and I'm so glad I did. I had mixed reactions again, perhaps like I did with Auschwitz and Birkenau. I wasn't keen on people taking selfies at the memorial site, but I suppose that's just the age we live in now. I cannot speak highly of the memorial and museum which hides perfectly remembers those tragic events of September 11th, 2001.

The following day, we went to a condo party, complete with ping pong tables, swimming pool and beer. It was a great way for me to finish a 4 day trip stateside. And my congratulations again to Matt and Kiley!

Vienna

After a few months of living normally again, working and paying rent, another trip was in order. This time it was Vienna. Another city high on my list, and with good reason I quickly discover after landing.

 Vienna Opera House - stunning!

Vienna was similar in respects of architecture as other places I'd visited in Europe, but in terms of grandeur and beauty, it was going to be hard to top.

We visited the Christmas markets along with the main markets which sold spices and sweets, clothing just about everything else in between. I had a delicious schnitzel there at a small cafe and sunk it down with a tasty German beer.

Vienna Magic of Advent market, by day and by night!

At night, we visited the Christmas market by the city hall, opposite the famous opera house and drank gluhwien with pastries. This is what seasonal travelling is all about. Drinking down warm beverages in the cold night air. I loved it.

Apple strudel? Yes please!

We also visited the Cafe Central for a traditional apple strudel. It was amazing with coffee and a lot cheaper than I was expecting, given the grand ceiling paintings and marble columns surrounding us.

The rest of our trip was spent wandering art galleries and the royal palaces. Vienna is such a magical city - one that everyone should take a visit too.

Other notable mentions - not travelling related

LONDON MARATHON 2017

I run the London Marathon 2017 - a bucket list point checked off. I loved every second of it and the crowds were amazing. An unforgettable experience.

RAGNAR RUN 2017 - THE FIRST UK ONE EVER

Along with my nine other teammates, we had to run from Maidstone along the coastline from Whistable all the way to Brighton. We started at 8am on the Saturday and finished around 6pm on the Sunday.

Another great challenge and one not to be forgotten (for the right and wrong reasons).

Well, that way my 2017... 2018 to follow!

Filling in the gaps... this could take a while (2016)

2016 - sorry I'm late.

The real stuff, finally!                    Santorini happy (a little too happy, perhaps)

Well, I'm back again. A little older, not much wiser, but still with the travel stories and the bug.

Yes, I know not many read this. Yes, I know I've travelled a hell of a lot since the last post in 2015, but I thought for my own memories, if anything, I need to get this going again. So many memories are forgotten over time, so I want to have a source to always refer to and look back on fondly.

So let's get this moving.

So, as 2015 turned to 2016, I still had high hopes of returning to South East Asia to complete some unfinished business. Alas, it did not come to fruition. Such is life, that I met a girl, decided to go back to work and the rest as they say is wanderlust. I sat at the desk, itching to get going again. Through the UK summer sun (ha!) and the cold winter. Autumn and spring seemed to have passed me by.

So let me fill you in on the travels for 2016:

Ireland
It was a Corker                                          Dublin's famous Temple Bar

My partner at the time was from Ireland, near Galway to be precise. So I made numerous trips to this wonderful country and was lucky enough to see some of the best parts.

I went to the obvious places - Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway, but also found other places like Doolin, New Ross, Waterford, Killarney and Kerry. So much natural beauty about this country made me see why so many people talk about. And despite the weather, you can always have a great time in Ireland.

Music is such a big part of the life there and many nights, I'd go to local pubs and taverns and have a few pints of Guinness and listen to the live music. It transports you to another place altogether, almost back in time in some respects.

Food is also a love of mine when I travel and I very much enjoyed all the stews and colcannon I could get my hands on.

Despite my personal circumstances changing, I'll always have a fondness and affection for Ireland where I visited many times over a four year period. The people, some friends and family all made my visits most welcome and homely and for that I will always be grateful.

Go raibh maith agat!

Santorini

Well, what can I say about this special island? It was magnificent and everything Instagram holds it up to be.

The famous white buildings and blue domes, the rocky streets and souvenir stalls, the restaurants and bars that overlooked the Aegean and beyond. It truly was unforgettable, and it didn't feel like 6 days was enough - even though we took out an ATV and went around the whole island.

The monastery and lighthouse are worth a visit and Perissa Beach is great for its black sands. We had a great picnic further north from Persia on Monolithos Beach and just let time pass us by.

Loved the snorkelling

On our second day, we took a cruise from Oia, did some snorkelling and watched the sunset from the boat over dinner and drinks. Many nights, we would order a carafe of red wine and watch the sun go down behind the Oia from the top of Thira where our amazing hotel was. Antonio was a fantastic host with his family, gave us a great discount on our ATV and generally gave us great tips on where to eat locally.

Santorini is such a maze. Every area you visit on the island has a story and labyrinth streets to get lost in. I can see why so many people give it a paradise status.

Efcharisto!

Krakow

A month later, maybe even less, I was in Krakow. Another beautiful city and country. And even in October, it can get a bit nippy.

Krakow as a city is very stunning and grand, with some architecture in the same league as Prague and Vienna (I know this now, having visited after the Krakow trip!). We enjoy the beer, the local food (the potato dumplings and red cabbage were superb) and visited a number of the sites in the city centre including the old town, the Lovers Bridge, the market square and clock tower.

On our third full day, we visited Wieliczka Salt Mine. What an incredible place this was. Deep underground (327 meters down - and the only way back up is a mine shaft lift), the mine is filled with statues and carvings of biblical figures and miners at work. There is also a lake underneath and the showpiece attraction - a chapel with grand staircases. It's a must visit for anyone going to Krakow. Definitely check it out.

The other major site we visited whilst in Krakow was the very poignant and upsetting Auschwitz and Birkenau. It took us an hour on a bus from Krakow, with an erratic bus driver delivering us shaken and stirred, but thankfully in one piece.

It difficult to describe the site of the worse mass murders in history so I'll leave that to your own imagination. I would encourage everyone to go and visit to learn about the atrocities that happened less than 100 years ago there and to raise awareness of the fantastic work that is being done there to maintain the history for future generations. I have no pictures of it because it didn't feel right, but I'm glad I visited to pay my respects.

And that will pretty much sign off 2016. What a great year for travel again. Hope you enjoy the update, albeit three years late.

Day 172 - I'm home!

Back with the siblings, once again. But I will return - a bit like 007. I like that.

Day 172 - 12th December

07:30am. I've landed back at Heathrow Terminal Four. The flight was pretty easy for 14 hours, just sitting, watching films and eating food. Vietnam airlines is pretty impressive, one I'd highly recommended.

The tube ride was an hour into central London. I was eyeballed half the way by grumpy travellers who stared at me, wondering why I had two huge bags with me.

The temperature was six degrees, a far cry from the average thirty I've been used to travelling around Asia. I'll need to get used to that. It may take a while.

Once I arrived at Victoria, I had a spot of breakfast and waited for my train to roll in. I was buzzing to see my family again. Five months and three weeks is a long time to be away. I was looking forward to seeing my niece at her christening on Sunday. Christmas was going to be a great occasion.

The second train journey of the day was just a routine one hour trip, one I'd done many times before when going to London. And before I knew it, I was home again. In Maidstone and heading across town towards my home.

And the reaction on my return was priceless. Everyone played the part and made me see how great it was to see them all again. The video below is my documentation of said reactions. Enjoy!

Day 171 - Returning Home!

It's time to go home, but just for a while.

Day 171 - 11th December

So it's confession time. My travelling time is up. Not forever but for a while because in two days my niece is being christened, in a few months one of my friends is getting married and in September next year, I am best man at another friend's wedding. Team those with Christmas and you'll see why I'm going home.

So nobody at home knew and I set off around lunchtime into a windy and very wet Singapore city, heading on the MRT towards Changi airport. It was an impressive place, big enough to be three football stadiums combined.

I had a two hour flight from Singapore to Ho Chi Minh which was pretty mundane and not much to write about. I was offered a meal which I took on. It was a tasty sweet and sour pork with rice and a fruit cup for dessert.

I then had a six hour stopover in Ho Chi Minh airport. I settled in a bar and did some reading over a few beers. The excitement was building and I was ready to be at home. Unfortunately one thing stood in my way - a 14 hour flight back to London.

I sat and waited it out. The beer was cold, the book was funny and the time flew away before I knew it.

I couldn't wait to get home. In less than 15 hours, I'll be back on home soil. In 18 hours, I'd been knocking on my front door! Come on!!!
